The military confrontation which took place in Vietnam between 1959 and 1975 .The reason was the determination of communist insurgents (called Vietcong) in South Vietnam, supported by the North Vietnam, to overthrow the South Vietnamese administration. The Vietnam War it was also a milestone of the United States history
The clash turned into a war between the two countries soon became an international dispute when the United States and another 40 countries supported the South Vietnam, while the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and Republic of China furnished ammunition to the North Vietnam and the Vietcong. The dispute also touched Laos where the Pathet Lao fought against the government since the year 1965 to 1973 and managed to overthrow the monarchy in 1975 and also involved Cambodia, whose government in 1973 gave up to the Khmer Rouge communist group
The Vietnam War was a milestone in the conventional military history, both by the amplitude of guerrilla warfare as the growing use of helicopters, which provided a great mobility on rough terrain. In addition, it was essentially a people’s war because the majority of the civilian population was mobilized to some form of active participation and the state of war suffered almost the same circumstances that the military. The broad use made by the United States chemical weapons like napalm, maimed and killed thousands of civilians, as long as the use of defoliators, mainly called “Agent Orange” used to eliminate cover, not only devastated the environment of essentially an agricultural country, but left harmful consequences for the physical health of human beings and Vietnamese-Americans who had been in contact with the chemical.
The American human losses reached the amount of 57,685in addition to 153,303 wounded. At the moment of the ceasefire agreement there were 587 prisoners of war between soldiers and civilians, who were subsequently released in its entirety, but current unofficial an estimate calculated that about 2,500 still remain missing.
